Dave Shula was born in 1959 in Lexington, Kentucky. Mr. Shula is one of five children; one brother and three sisters. The family moved to Detroit in 1960, then on to Baltimore in 1963 and finally to Miami Lakes, FL in 1970. Mr. Shula met his wife, Leslie, during his college years at Dartmouth College; they married in 1982. The Shula’s have three sons and two grandsons.
Mr. Shula was a star athlete and top notch student at Chaminade High School in Hollywood, Florida. In addition to being Salutatorian of his class, he was a first team selection to the Broward County football and baseball teams. He has been inducted into the Chaminade HS Hall of Fame along with the Broward County, FL Sports Hall of Fame. He has been recognized as one of the Top 100 high school football players in Broward County history. Dave Shula’s excellence in academics and sports continued at Dartmouth College where he was a two-time All–Ivy receiver, the leading receiver on the 1978 Ivy League Championship team, New England College Football Player of the Year in 1980, and played in the Senior Bowl, the nation’s premier college all-star football game. Dave was recognized by Dartmouth as a “Wearer of the Green”, Dartmouth’s prestigious alumni athletic award.
After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1981, Dave Shula began his professional life with the Baltimore Colts as a wide receiver and kick return specialist. He moved into the professional coaching ranks for the next fifteen years starting with the Miami Dolphins, then the Dallas Cowboys, and finally the Cincinnati Bengals. Dave Shula was the Head Coach of the Bengals for four and a half years.
In 1997 Mr. Shula joined a small restaurant franchising company, Shula’s Steak Houses. During that time there were just six Shula’s locations. However, with Dave Shula on board, Shula’s Steak Houses started an expansion process with its six restaurant concepts: Shula’s Steak House, the original upscale Steak House themed after the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season; Shula’s on the Beach which offers more seafood than the original in a beachfront location; Shula’s 2, a restaurant that is more sport, more casual, more steak; Shula’s 347 Grill, a contemporaryupscale but relaxed dining experience; Shula’s Bar & Grill, features lighter fare with exciting spirits & wine offerings; and finally Shula Burger, a fast casual burger concept.
In 2000, Dave Shula was named President of Shula’s Steak Houses LLLP. and has overseen the Shula’s expansion to 35 locations in thirteen states. Shula’s continually ranks as one of the Top Five Steak Houses in the USA, cementing its reputation as America’s Steak House. After fifteen years as president Dave moved into the role of Partner in 2015. Mr. Shula keeps busy by ensuring that the commitment to success through dedication, passion, and execution. He makes personal visits to all locations and is in constant communication with customers as well. He has made it his mission to create “Raving Fans” as well as serving as an industry expert on various panels around the country.
An accomplished speaker and Angus Beef expert Mr. Shula has appeared on seminar panels for the Certified Angus Beef Association, Hotel F & B conferences, as well as Restaurant industry conferences. He also lectures on “Sports is Business & Business is Sports” across the country. Mr. Shula has transitioned his competitive nature towards the success of Shula’s Steak Houses LLLP and also into his private life as an outdoor enthusiast. Dave has completed the Disney Marathon in Orlando, the Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon and four Iron Man Triathlons.
Dave has kept close ties to his football past at almost every level by coaching at the Manning Passing Academy annually and following the careers of his brother, Mike, who is the Offensive Coordinator of the Carolina Panthers, son Dan, who is the Wide Receivers coach at Florida Atlantic U., son Chris, who is Defensive Quality Control for the San Diego Chargers, and son Matt, who is a Video Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. Dave’s wife Leslie is an assistant in the Athletic Department of St. Thomas Aquinas HS arguably the best HS sports program in the country.
